I dont know what ground it was original (over the years long ago I owned 7 of those but plum forget , but after you reconnect the battery AND BEFORE you start her Id turn on the lights (if it has any) or an ignition switch (dont start it remember) and see if the ammeter swings over to - discharge as it should iffffffffff its wired to match the polarity of the battery.... Then BEFORE you start it Polarize the genny to be safe cuz if its started and the genny is polarized opposite from the battery it might harm the Voltage Regulator. The genny can be made to charge at either polarity once polarized so if you get the ammeter wired right so its not reading bass ackwards and the VR is compatible with your ground (many are bi polar) you may be fine. The coil should also be wired correct polarity to match your ground.
If you hook it up say Positive ground and that makes the ammeter work the right direction and the coils lil + terminal is wired to the distributor,,,,,,,theres a good chance thats the correct polarity but still polarize the genny before you start it to be safe.
