As long as the small gas engine does not have a cat converter,( I dont think any do unless it is in a small car or pickup), then the diesel oil is actually better for your engine. Most Gasoline only oils (API S rating) no longer have the zink phosphate additive that is necessary for long life of a flat tappet cam/lifters. Modern car engines no longer use flat tappet cams/lifters, so they removed the additive because it damages cat converters at very high mileage. Diesel oil(API C rating) still contains the zinc phosphate additive, so it better protects older or lawn & garden type small engines from cam/lifter wear.
