Well since 2001 we lost all the Burlington ind. plants. Last one closed about 4 weeks ago.(3 in this area) Last year Dan River Mills shut down. Danville Va. unempoloyment jumped to 13%. The Dan River plant in the town near me closed and just under 400 jobs were sucked out of that little town. It was around 2003 that Pillowtex near Martinsville closed. That shot them to 15% unemployed in that county. That was around 1,200 jobs. Osullivan (sp) in South Boston Va. closed last year. Several hundred jobs there gone. Burrus hardwood flooring plant close last year in the same little town that the Dan River plant is in. That was a few over 300 jobs gone. All this in about a 100 mile radius. I'm sure I missed some of the smaller plants.
Then we had the tobacco buyout. We use to grow more tobacco in this county than is grown in the state now. So we've been gutted in this area. Many folks just moved away. Biggest thing going around here is the re-education and training under the free trade act. All those folks that lost their job get a free education for 2 years with pay just like a job. So they are not counted as unemployed. They get a pretty good deal to go to school for two years and get a pay check every two weeks under the free trade act. Our tax money at work. Hard to understand our jobs going away and then pay people to go to school to train for new jobs and there are no jobs to train for.
We did get a new Walmart. Wife lost her job and now working at Walmart for less than $8 per hour. We have several Canadian companies that moved in making paper plates and napkins.Under 30 folks work at those places. Very small operations. Guess they got the 10 year tax free deal too. Those are all under $7 per hr jobs. So as long as all of you pay your taxes the folks here will keep going to school. LOL LOL Makes a lot of sense doesn't it.
