It was so cold riding those mounted pickers in Iowa, and it was hard to put on enough clothing and still be able to get on the picker. A "Heat Houser" was out of the question, so you had to just drive and tough it out. My uncle once said "It's such a cold job that for every cup of coffee I drink to get warm I have to get off the picker and relieve myself of three of them." The sting on your face from dirt blowing off the rear tires because of those strong fall/winter northern winds was so much fun. Sometimes the tractor would catch fire, and then the flames would drop down and the field was quickly blazing away, then you had to run like crazy (no cell phones then) to get to a phone and call the fire dept. by the time they got there the tractor/picker was totalled and lots of acres were lost. It was not uncommon in those days to see farmers without a thumb or a couple fingers missing because they thought they could unplug the picker before the machine grabbed them. Everytime I think I might want to drive a picker again in the upper midwest, I go lay down until the thought goes away.

There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
