Just went thru a similar process.Needed a machine to replace a septic system,install drainage and dig footers.After looking at old tractors/backhoe setups I went with an older backhoe.The farm tractors just were not build for such use and were pretty used up in the age range your talking about. There are some decent units available if you spend some time looking.I would suggest looking at Case 580,Ford 4500 - 555, or Massey Ferguson MF40.I went with the 580c becasue parts are plentiful,cheap and the transmission can be serviced without splitting the tractor. You might want to avoid IH parts can be difficult to find, a transmission rebuild can cost as much as the backhoe is worth.
