I was given a 1978 ( I think ) h16xl- it"s been sitting out in the weather behind the neighbors house for at least 8 yrs that I know of. I got the engine started without much trouble, and the tractor moved under it"s own power for about 20 ft, then stopped - engine still running, just no drive. I checked the trans fluid ( should have sooner, I know . . . ), and it was quite low - just a little showing on the dipstick. Clean and clear. I topped it off with 20w - it took just under a qt to get near the top of the operating range. But still no drive. The selector lever seems to be operating the valve - you can feel spring loading at both ends of the travel, and about 2" of free play between. I pulled the filter, and it"s full of clean oil and looks clear - no gunk or dirt. The neighbor pushed it about 100 yds from his yard to mine, and I don"t think it was in neutral - there was resistance, and a clicking sound, he said. So, is the trans trashed from either the pushing or the brief run with low fluid ? No amount of monkeying with the selector or the treadle, low or hi rpm, could get any drive out of it at all. What"s next ? Pull the motor ( a recent Vanguard ohv 16 twin ) and discard the tractor ? I don"t want it badly enough to do a trans tear down - too many other projects. Or, is there still hope ? As you can tell, I don"t know much about these . . . .
