Not to many years ago dairy calves wouldn't bring the cost of trucking. There was a local story of a guy who took two to the local sale barn in his pick up with a cap and put a sign on the truck "FREE CALVES" and went in to watch cattle sell. When he came out and looked into the truck to see if anyone had taken the calves there were four!
