I happen to be in east central Iowa myself, near Cedar Rapids. The D-17 block has the same bore and stroke, but has a heavier crank and some other things that make them heavier. You have a good plan for the kit, but where are you getting the kit from? I got a 175 kit for my WC from Ellis in Coggon for a lot less than you have priced. Oh, well. Might want to check with them, they really know their stuff. There is an AC graveyard near Maquoketa, but Bill Deppe doesn't have any D series that I know of. Dave at Ellis could help with used parts. There are no short block types of engines done for these old girls. There are some for the newer big diesels, though. I'm not sure about getting the block out. It's pretty hard to do the front and rear main bearings and seals with the block in frame. My WC engine can be removed withought taking the frame appart. Could you maybe pull just one frame rail and get it out the side. Just some thoughts. If you try Ellis or whatever dealer you go to, you should be able to ask their mechanics how they do it. Best of luck. Aaron
