I agree that without a good air filter, all is lost. My experience with synthetic oil over the last 30+ years tells me that synthetic oil under the exact same conditions as mineral oil does not get dirty nearly as quickly. The oil film that forms the seal between piston rings and the cylinder wall is so much better with synthetic oil that an engine that uses a bit of mineral oil will use 1/2 or less of synthetic oil. I believe this much better oil seal between the rings and cylinder wall prevents a lot more of combustion products and dirt from getting past the rings and into the oil. Synthetic oil will take atleast twice as many miles to appear dark and dirty, also it does not develope that nasty cumbustion products odor nearly as fast as mineral oil. My experience has led me to believe that synthetic oil does not get nasty nearly as fast as mineral oil because it seals this stuff on top of the piston where it gets blown out with the exhaust. With 12,000+ mile oil / filter changes and no build up of gunk inside the engine and no wear, I have to conclude that very little of the nasty stuff gets past the combustion chambers.
