To avoid troubles you need a set of heads off a Windsor style block. The 289 and 302 heads have very poor airflow. The cheapest move is to get a set of the LATER Explorer 5.0 heads. These are improved versions of the GT40 heads that have the spark plugs angled for superior burn (more power and lower emissions) and being cast iron are pretty cheap.
