The very first thing I would check is the large gland nut around the top link sensing piston, just ahead of the rocker. I've seen that back off on mine with the same results. The second thing I'd check is the lift lever/linkage itself. My 7710 has a "cross" joint made from sheet metal in the linkage that rots away over time... I don't think your 76 willhave that, but check the simple stuff all the same. If that doesn't cure it, the lift cover is coming off. If it's got some hours on it then there's likely some worn linkages inside. If that's the case then you NEED a Ford service manual or take the cover to a dealer to have it repaired and reset. That cover has a rather detailed setting procedure due to the load monitor. You can get by without most of the setting tools but the load monitor adjustment tool is just about essential. The rest can be ascertained from the manual with the use of a good depth gauge on a digital caliper... Without that you'll need a few depth/setting gauges from a dealer. It's probably about an hour's work for somebody to set that cover unless they've got it absolutely committed to memory. The first time is the toughest and it might well take you a few hours to do yourself. I know it took me a few hours and a few mistakes before I got it right.
