I bought two Farmall Hs from a neighbor last spring. One was loose and the other was stuck. The loose one I got running very quickly, just installed a new battery and rebuilt the carb. Fired right off after a few tries :-) That was 5 months ago :-) Fast forward 4 months and I decided it was time to get the other one running. I took the head off and dropped the oil pan, removed connecting rod caps, and with a long piece of wood and a hammer I was able to drive the pistons up and out. I had taken the sparkplugs out and filled the cylinders up with diesel fuel soon after I bought it. That 4 months of diesel fuel soaking the pistons undoubtedly helped considerably. The pistons and sleeves had very little wear, so I just honed the sleeves, installed new rings and had the valves ground. Put it all back together and what do you know? It runs! Had a setback though. I drove it for the first time and there was a horrible growling noise coming from the tranny. So, back in the shop it goes. After I get the top off of the tranny, I found that the top tranny shaft spines are worn enough to allow the sliding gears to flop and wobble around far too much :-( If that is not enough, I found a couple of gears on the bottom shaft that have some of the teeth severely eaten by rust, no doubt caused from sitting for an extended period and water getting into and sitting in the bottom of the transmission. I located and bought a set of used tranny gears, now I am just waiting for them to get here, boy, time sure creeps along when you are anxiously waiting for something :-)
