The Fordsons became boat anchors before most of their contemporaries, for two reasons- first, the engine was tempramental to start generally, and had to be kept in a state of tune that was beyond most farmers; and second, you couldn't tow them to start, because they had a worm drive instead of the conventional ring and pinion rear end. Everybody (myself included) remembers an old Fordson that we played on as kids, but nobody can remember one that ever ran. My dad once said "If it weren't for all the dead Fordsons that got melted for the war effort, we'd all be speaking German today."
