Probably changed when multigrade oils increased in quality. 30 years ago continuous high heat would break down a multigrade to its base property - specifically 15-40W became straight 15W. Today's multigrades - especially those that are designed for heavy use don't break down nearly so fast and can withstand much higher heat levels for longer durations. This is especially true with sythetics.
Just like 30 years ago you couldn't use deterginated oil in small "splash lube" engines because it would cause foam. Today's deterginated oils don't foam up like they used to.
