Almost no one born since about 1950 ever heard of the Essex Tri-Directional. It was light years ahead of its time and if not for poor decisons by management, it would be THE tractor even today. The Bi-D was of course the first model and all were supposedly recalled and destroyed. Many folks know someone who knows someone, etc., who have one, but the consensus is that they're all gone. My wife's oldest brother worked (in Research & Development) on the Quad-D during the late 50s. He always insisted that the concept was flawed and that the tractor would never work............and so it turned out. He said that "they" were determined to compete with John Deere's new 4 and 6 cylinders, instedad of concentrating on their core market. Managements decision to dump millions of 1950s dollars into the project doomed the company. What was left of the company was bought by Hewlett-Packard and the R & D department developed H-Ps first computers in the early 70s. Knowing how the Tri-D worked, it was a perfect fit. You'll almost never see a Tri-D on a dealer's lot, but there are many rusting away in fence rows/old barns. What's so sad is that most of the parts to get them going can be purchased at any decent automotive supply house.
