Next big thing is rain. We got 9 in. about 10 days ago. never seen soil soak up that much water before. It's about gone now. Guys cutting up fescue sod with offset disk can't keep the disk in the ground after 9 in. of rain. If we don't get a lot of moisture by the middle of March it's all over for cattle here. Will sell them all along with everyone else. We gotta make a bumper crop of hay next spring or there's no need to own cows. Gluten/soy hull pellets have gone from $120 per ton to $180 in 8 weeks. Guess this last fuel price hike will send it to $200.

South of me the water supply is still very low for many areas in NC. Some town having water hauled in for humans on tanker trucks. If it doesn't rain maybe it'll snow. Only difference in now and 1931-33 is it's hotter in the summers. If the drought don't kill grass the heat burns it down.
Last time I was at the salebarn I saw some drought cattle going for 22 cent. Lots of bones showing on some cattle that day. I hope folks don't wait that long before selling if they don't have feed. Fat heavy cows are still in the low 50's here. Or were a week or two ago.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
