Yes to all 3 questions. The old engines were running on leaded fuels. This new fuel does wear the valves out on older diesels. Check with your local machine shop about how many 6.9 and 7.3 Fords heads they do valve jobs on and whats wrong. It also wears out the guides on the older Perkins from Ford and Massey, and the old style 743 and 855cid Cummins engines. I had to build the heads on a 7.3 last month that only had 109,000 miles on it, the exhaust valve stems and guides were worn to the point you could shake them by hand while still assembled. Most of the time they been going to about 200,000. Let's don't get sucked in on the major improvements accomplished. The real truth is the profit margin. When fuel was a quarter a gallon we had a government sponsored shortage, but in 2 weeks time and at 75 cent per gallon we had plenty again. I have'nt seen such a vast improvement from auto makers. My 1st new pickup cost 2800 list, the last 1 listed for 37,500. On the 1st it was all American, on the last its very little American.
