Look--this may offend someone in the scrap business, but that's just too bad. It has been my experience that scrap haulers and people in the business are some of the most short sighted people I've ever met. They can't see past the price per ton/load, and you can spend a whole lot of time explaing how valuable/rare/historic something is to no avail. They simply don't get it! You have to keep in mind that you might be speaking to someone with urgent chemical dependencies, and has limitied social skills. Your best bet was mentioned above--watch the guy's route, arrive the yard when he does, and pay the manager a premium. I'm speaking from expereince as a former manager of an auto auction yard situated right next to a scrap yard. That's how the game is played!
