A later post in that forum identified it as Wasco County- in Oregon, south of the Columbia, a bit east of the Cascades. It's a "rain shadow"- weather comes from the west, and all the rain gets wrung out of the clouds over the mountains- so very low rainfall, hence low yields, in the 30 bushel range. Takes probably 5000 acres to make a living, and that is probably getting tough with the higher costs of inputs these days. So steep they use "hillside" combines- body of the combine is on a heavy shaft that runs the length of the machine, with weights and sensors that keep it level while the running gear follows the contour.
