You would do well to do some google research on some of those various products with an emphasis on emperical data rather than advertizing. Slick 50's basic component is PTFE or Teflon. It's slick alright... Until it settles out in the oil. I think you'll find a fair amount of evidence of that, leading to plugged oil filters, and thus the complete LOSS of the engine due to no lubrication. At the very best I'd say 90% of these products are a clear waste of money. Perhaps 10% of them add greater concentrations of anti wear additives that are already found in the oil you're using, so I'd suspect that the gains are minimal on most of those products. They at least don't do harm which is a contrast to what the other 90% could do. Synthetic oil is an entire different ballgame. I believe there are benefits to it's use. Whether or not there's enough benefit to pay for it's high cost is another story. I spose if you get the extended drain intervals and save on filter costs you might come ahead, but if you change oil as you always did before I don't think you'll gain much. There's no shortage of OTR diesel's running 1-2 million miles today with no major repairs, all done on plain old dino oil. Cars and light trucks routinely run until their bodies fall off also.... so i don't see much point in using synthetic oil there or anywhere else UNLESS you get the extended change interval. Who knows... mabey I'm wrong, but that's how I see it.
