Mike French has the cause nailed. Those heads were prone to cracking and running them down hill with out the extra tank made cracking even more likelly. Try not to let it get warm running down hill or you will crack a head. Very hard to find a replacment head that's not cracked. There's a bunch of guys over on the red power construction forum that know the old IH crawlers inside out.
