I was cleaning up and using the JD 400 backhoe to haul loads of dirt and wood ash over to fill in a gully... I knew I had only 1 good brake (left) and needed to pump on the right to get any action... well... The hill went downhill pretty good (but not too bad) to the edge of the fence, then had about a 50' vertical drop to the bottom... About 10' from the fenceline, I pushed on the brakes and this time both of them went to the stops... I had just enough presence of mind to drop the bucket, (things happen quickly even at 3 mph) wiped out the fence, cleared some brush and stopped with the bucket teetering on the edge of the cliff. At that point, she wouldn't back out things were downhill enough so as there was no weight on the rear wheels... It seemed a little teetery side to side too... So I put the outriggers down to stabilize things (I didn't want to go any further downhill), turned the seat around and got the hoe going and drug myself back from the edge.... Then had to get back to the barn, get the tools and fix the fence in the dark before the cows got out. I was cussin pretty good by midnight when I finally got things back together. Someday I better fix the brakes.... bbott
