My closest call was the time I almost ran my dads JD 4400 combine into a pond. We were in the middle of harvesting wheat and something went wrong with the brakes. Most of the land we farm is pretty flat so you really don't need brakes that much anyway. At least thats what my dad thought, so he decided to worry about the brake problem later after the wheat was finished.

Well I took over driving the combine so dad could go eat lunch. Only one problem, he forgot to tell me about the brakes. Anyway I started into the field above the farm pond. I got to the corner of the field and pushed in the clutch. Shifted into neutral and braked to stop so I could shift into reverse, back up and swing the machine around. I pushed the brakes and nothing happened the combine kept going straight toward the farm pond directly in front of me. There is a gently sloping grassy area between the field and the farm pond which increased the combine's speed. I did not know what to do. I tried to jerk the machine into reverse while it was rolling but that did not work. I snatched up the parking brake but it did not work either because it was out of adjustment. I realized that the machine was going into the drink and I was going with it if I could not get it stopped. I was just about to open the door and bail out of the cab. Then it came to me, drop the head! I dropped the grainhead and it dug into the dirt. somehow the combine stopped just feet from the bank of the pond. And I put it in reverse and backed up the hill.

I went to the shop to dig the slab of turf out of the header so it would not go through the machine. Dad showed up and said what happened? So I told him that there was something wrong with the brakes and that I had narrowly escaped running the combine into the 20 foot deep pond. He said Oh, they went out this morning I forgot to tell you.

Moral of the story is if something is wrong with a machine, STOP and fix it!

Today's Featured Article - Earthmaster Project Progress Just a little update on my Earthmaster......it's back from the dead! I pulled the head, and soaked the stuck valves with mystery oil overnight, re-installed the head, and bingo, the compression returned. But alas, my carb foiled me again, it would fire a second then flood out. After numerous dead ends for a replacement carb, I went to work fixing mine.I soldered new floats on the float arm, they came from an old motorcycle carb, replaced the packing on the throttle shaft with o-rings, cut new ga ...
