Not a wives tale. If you look at a rim made for a tube they are differant then ones made to be used tubeless. The tube type are made in ways that used tubeless can make the split or bend because of how the tire sits on them. Also a lot of the tube type are rivoted togeather and the rivots don't hole air. Back years ago tire companys warned about mounting the new type tubeless tires on rims made for tube type and the problems they had with liabilty for being unsafe. There is no known history regarding its origins or what service it had done, but the following work was undertaken alone to bring it up to show standard.
