"the filter that sits below the cap" -- Do you mean the mesh filter under the breather cap (which is also where you add oil)? That one only needs to be cleaned. The oil filter on the left side of the block should be replaced at each oil change. Could be original style canister type, or often converted to spin-on. Spin-on is New Holland 300 Dual, Car Quest 51515, Fram PH8A, etc., not sure about the cartridge type. (although those are available at CarQuest or Napa,too.) Book calls for 10w in cold weather, 30w in warm weather, but that was printed before good multi-weight oil was available. I run 15w40 year-round in my tractors. (northern WI)
