The VIN on a vehicle will tell you where it was constructed. The first character in a VIN indicates the country of origin.
J = Japan 1 = USA 2 = Canada 3 = Mexico (most VW VIN's start with 3) 4 = USA W = Germany Y = Sweden
I don't remember the country codes for Great Britain, France or China. It's interesting to see how many Toyota and Nissan VIN's start with 1 instead of J.
