Once you find the cause, see if you can stop it from repeating the cycle as already said.
One tool that takes the work out of the chopping by hand and I assume there is dirt under your location (no concrete, pavement or utilities) etc., is a chipping gun as I call it either a small, medium and or large electric jackhammer, will work fine, and if you have nothing under it to worry about and you can get power to the location, one of these makes short work of clearing thick ice, frosted and heaved areas under door ways etc., I use an old bosch, similar in size to the brute they make now, I've hacked through some 2-3 feet of ice build up around the barns, built up from ice/snow coming off the roof, they're meant for breaking concrete, ice is a lot easier. A heavier one will be more of a work out, but like I mentioned, the hammer bit breaks that ice up easily, I prefer a flat end, the point may send chunks up to your face, use safety goggles and hearing protection if you use one.
