I'll agree that mine isn't perfect each time either. Since some of the gears require 2 levers to move together when going to a different gear, a little linkage maladjustment could make the difference.
Mine only has 4000 hours on it so you'd think the linkage would still be in pretty good shape.

I can understand a $4500 price for repair with having to remove the cab and all. Was in the Deere dealer one day and they were working on one and the cab was up in the air on a chain hoist. Looking over their shoulder, looked like too much for me to ever want to tackle.
