Generally JD tractor of the '40 vintage are closed center. But I don't know about the 2240. Often one can tap the pressure and return at the rear mounted remote valve, but the valve on the attachment has to be converted to closed center. Some valves convert, some don't so you may have to change the valve. The modular valves from Prince are handy for making a custom valve and are easy to set up open or closed center. That's what I used to make a new valve for my Long 1099 backhoe that I first used on my MF-135 that I now use on my JD 4020 and made the conversion from open center to closed center.
