I have nothing but good to say about the lx line. We have an lx665 and have never had any kind of trouble with it yet. I am not sure exactly what year it is but I am thinking it is a 1999 model. It has about 2500 hours on it so far and has been trouble free. The only complaint I can even think about coming up with would be the location of the engine oil filter. They are a little bit tricky to get at but that is it. This unit has done everything that we have asked of it to do without problems. I would buy another one in a heartbeat and not even think about it.
The LS line that replaced them was nothing more than a different paint job on the same machine. Their features are just about identical. I know a few people who have the LS170 model, which is what replaced the LX665. So far they have not had any problems with their unit's either. Now the current line of L series does appear to be a little different, but I have not looked at one up close to see how the features differ. In fact I cannot say for sure that they are different or not mechanically, but they look to be different on the outside to me.
I have not read the other thread that you are talking about so I cannot validate what others have said, but I would not be afraid of buying one personally. Just my .02 cents.

Today's Featured Article - 12-Volt Conversions for 4-Cylinder Ford 2000 & 4000 Tractors - by Tommy Duvall. After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet). I did keep everything I replaced for the day I do want to restore her to showroom condition.
