Really, so in Michigan you have to appear for a not guilty plea for a non moving violation like this, expired plates/registration is usually not that big of a deal here they'll obviously write you for it, but it's kind of one step above a parking violation, I don't think you would have to appear over here in NY, should be able to mail it in regardless of the plea, I could be wrong, funny how things are so different from state to state. If you plead not guilty to a moving violation via mail in plea here, they'd send you a notice for your appearance date, as you'd be going to trial unless you had an attorney represent you to see if it could be reduced prior to the appearance. Well hopefully it gets tossed based on what you mentioned about having until the next business day after an expiration on a holiday, best of luck to you on it !
