My wife and I had refused to buy one until we found the following on-sale. We just bought a new 42" Sony LCD for $680. Seems to be a good deal since most I seed cost a lot more.
We don't care about the HD. We watch mostly rented movies from Netfix and they all come widescreen. So, we bought the new LCD mostly for the widescreen. Also bought a region-free DVD player since we've been buying old American TV progamming that's only available in Germany. We're not German - it just so happens that many versions of old westerns - like Bonanza and Gunsmoke are only available in complete form in Germany - and not the U.S. Why?? I don't have a clue. But to view, we had to get a European and region-free DVD player.
One big benefit though with the widescreen LCD is - we're on solar electric and the LCD uses a lot less power than our old 32" square CRT TV.
