I borrowed a friends truck to do a tow job. It was a 2002 Dodge 2500 TD. He had the wick turned way up with a big turbo, big injectors, power programmer, exhaust, etc... He had fuel pressure gauges, pyrometer, boost gauge, tranny temp gauge, oil temp gauge. Darned thing looked like a jet cockpit. Anyhow, we towed a 9000lb load and got 14mpg. I was severely impressed. Dropped the load, turned around and got 14mpg on the way back empty.... It took exactly the same amount of fuel on the return trip, within the gallon. Don't think I ever used more than the first 1/10th of the throttle... It was quite a learning curve since my last experience with a diesel was a 86 Chevrolet breadtruck...
