Yep - the same symptoms - even holding the old and new starter up to each other - it was tough to tell the difference - but there was a little over an 1/8th inch difference or so. If you held them nose to nose - side by side - and lined up the mounting flanges with each other - you could see the difference.
But that was on an older pickup than yours - I was thinking one of the mid-80's Fords we had - but it's been a while.
I just remember it took a couple of days, a lot of head scratching, and a few trips to the part store to get sorted out...
