I am not a fan of the drive it around with a belly full of diesel theory. Drain the gear oil, put in 5 gallons of diesel, jack up one rear wheel and let her spin. Shift through to make sure all gears are engaged, even reverse. You will be able to hear a difference when the gears are stripped of the old lube. You can hear the gear teeth clattering together when the cushioning effect of the old oil is gone.
I can't remember how much oil yours holds, but my last held eight. I had to buy 2 five gallon buckets, so I measured out 2 gallons and poured that in. I ran her a minute with the two gallons of clean lube to gather up the diesel. Then drained that and poured in the 8 gallons. This removes the traces of diesel and gets rid of those two extra gallons that I was going to overfill the case with anyway!
