What are you trying to do, and where are you trying to do it in?
Some states have outlawed foothold traps. If you're in one of those states, you're SOL on getting one legally. You can pull it off via ebay, just not legally. Beware if you get caught!
There's also the matter of size. You've got to get the right one for the right animal. A small one works fine on muskrats, but isn't worth a darn on coyotes. Then there's the matter of jaw offset, laminates, etc.
Lets assume you get one, and off you go trapping. It's a good bit harder to do than most folks realize, getting an animal to put its paw in a quarter sized spot. Try it some time with a pet and a quarter.
Cage traps, conabears, snares, etc. Valid alternatives, with various pros and cons to each. From effectiveness to legality. A conabear in front of a bucket is devistating to raccoons for example, but you'll never catch a fox in it.
