When I was a kid, my eldest brother and dad put together this nifty contraption. It wasn't a treadmill, but more of an exercise bike. They took an old bicycle and welded a bracket onto it to hold a generator that the pedals drove (chain drive on back sprocket.) They had an old electronics kit with a relay arrangement on it, and spliced the relay to the coax going to the tv.
Net result was that if you were pedaling, the relay closed and you could watch tv. but if you stopped pedaling, the picture went away.
It would have been a great exercise idea...Except mom had this nifty idea that she'd sit in a chair and delegate the pedaling duties to the other 3 kids.
