Dukester is on the right track. When you put the trans in neutral the shift forks for 1st-rev & 2nd will "line up". That is the sockets for the ends of the gear shift lever will be in line. The groove in the shift fork for the overdrive shifter simply has to line up with the overdrive shifter lever. If the vasrious gears and shifters have been assembled properly that's about all there is to it. I assume the sliding gear shaft & gears have not been removed, so that is not an issue. If only the shifter shaft and shifters have been removed to repair the problem, start there. Maybe you have put one of them in backwards?
