Yes, they ran on four cylinders at low load to control white smoke (unburned fuel). Sales grabbed the "feature" and marketed it as a fuel saving advantage. By dropping out four cylinders, the load increased on the remaining cylinders which increased combustion temperature, and lowered/eliminated white smoke. Probably did improve fuel consumption a little at low load operation, because fuel was being utilized rather than just being spewed out. I read somewhere that they were built only because IH needed to move more V8's, and offering them in tractors was a means to get rid of them.
