The other problem with refilling them is that sometimes the refill ink isn't the same type as the original ink. I have seen it where it slowly clogs up the jets on the cartridge.
With cartridges that have the print head built in (HP), they aren't made to last a long time. They only want it too last the initial time, but obviously it worked out a little better for you.
Some printers do have memories to make it so it won't work with refilled ones (since the cartridges are numbered) and I haven't had the oppotunity to figure a way around it.
Here is a scary thought- In 2003 (I think) HP made 50% of their profit from their ink sales and that only accounted for about 10% of their total sales.
