I rebuilt a Turbo 350 in a Chevy 4x4 pickup once. I bought an overhaul kit and an overhaul manual, and set to work. Anytime throughout the process when special tools were needed, I jury-rigged or fabricated. I did make an adapter to mount the trans on my engine stand. Made it a lot easier.
The trans worked fine when I got done. I just never had the need to do another.
Keep in mind that a cousin of mine, who was once a Ford tech and overhauled transmissions routinely, once said that overhauling transmissions is 10% technical knowledge, 10% physical effort, and 80% housekeeping. In other words, keep everything meticously clean!
