I've tried herefords several times through the years. They continually have calving problems, and are not hardy enough to make a significant contribution to the farm, unless you plan to have a very labor intensive operation. They are more or less docile if pure blooded, but what whiteface I've crossed with brahma and limosine turn out to be aggressive and mean as hell. I always like to breed heifers so they calve at about 24-30 months old, regardless of weight. If you're gonna wait til 1000 lbs on a hereford, she may die with old age 1st. A pure hereford is like a pure longhorn, you need to sell them at 3 yrs old or 300 lbs, whichever comes 1st.
