8 Volts was not a common thing in the automotive field, however it was a standard battery in the marine world and remained well into the 80's. Marine systems were 32 volt on large yachts and small commercial boats. I remember many Murphy Diesels in cranes and construction equipment that were 32 volt and like boats and yachts used four 8 Volt batteries.
