Back when I was running cattle, I had a headgate with about a 20 foot chute running up to it. Cattle would invariably try to turn around, and it was a real struggle to get them up to it. To make matters worse, the chute was a little too wide, so anything under 800 lbs. thought it could turn around and flee. An old guy told me to modify the run-up chute so it curved, and they couldn't see the headgate until they made the last "turn" and were within 10 feet of the headgate. It worked- they're so close to the headgate when they see it, they don't think they can turn around and avoid it, so they just try to go forward and jump through it.
