Thanks for a thought-provoking post. We all enjoy a few "freebies." What would happen if these price supports/subsidies were eliminated? Just asking the farming community.
I think some programs are beneficial--CRP for example--for wildlife and for the environment by reducing run-off, etc. Good pheasnt numbers benefit South Dakota's and Iowa's economy more than a few more bushels of corn. If you've ever been in Mitchell, SD on the opening day of pheasant season you know what I mean.
A farmer in this area has been removing woody fence lines, I assume to expand corn production. Gone is any cover for wildlife: rabbits, deer, songbirds, etc. Even hawk and turkey roosts are gone. Some things just can't be assigned a monetary value. Watching a hawk soar overhead is an experience that can't be bought.
