Caleb, you are a man that was born about 40 years too late! You would have been great in the musclecar era. Problem is that your heart is in the right place but putting together 400 small blocks is something for a rich older retired guy. It gets so pricey and when your done the gas mileage is very bad. Smaller cars can be cool too and they can be very reliable and get great gas mileage. Find yourself an old volkswagon diesel rabbit or escort diesel and show everybody how you can get 50 mpg with it. Now that would be cool! There are a lot of them on ebay. That will also keep the cops off your tail all the time. I can only imagine how they will get you if you drive a hopped up Nova on the street. If you are dead set on the 400 they do have some quirks. I had a 400 small block in a jeep pickup 20 years ago. Was a 4 speed and the flywheel was alomst $200 at the chevy dealer. Mine came out of a 1970 Impala and it had 4 bolt mains. 2 bolt or 4 bolt are about the same. Don't seek out a 4 bolt. If I were you I would find a 350 vortec out of a pickup and have a 3 angle valve job, some new rings and a nice dual plane intake. Vortec heads are very good and are plentiful and cheap. The 350 vortec will run as good as the 400 and will be much easier to get and will be a newer casting with lots less chance for problems. 400 was kind of the b@stard child of the chevy family and they have a lot of little quirky problems. Stick with the 350's and let the circle track guys have the rest of the 400's for sprint cars. Better yet, get the volkeswagon diesel and be an innovater to your friends. Good luck.
