There is a bullet point shaped device that is spring loaded and when you shifted into park it applies spring pressure on the bullet. The bullet tries to push the back side of the parking pawl which has a lug on it that engages the parking gear and once in it will stop further rotational movement of the transmission output shaft and lock the rear whells. If you are rolling too fast or the output shaft is rotating too fast the bullet can't get in behind the parking pawl to push it into the parking gear. The result is that the spring loaded bullet and the parking pawl just oscillate back and forth until it slows down enough to engage the pawl firmly into the gear. It is designed to do that so nothing breaks. We tested then by driving the vehicles back and forth at speed to see if they would drop in premturely. It makes a lot of noise but does not cause damage.
