Had something similar to that happen here. When we were building our chicken houses 3-4 years ago, had a dog that came up one night. Next morning, our dirtwork contractor called and said he had a dog on his bulldozer that wouldn't let him on. By the time we got up there she had become somewhat more friendly (gave up the bulldozer), and when the contractors left she stayed. We believe she had been abused by children somewhere in the past, because she will get visious with children if she isn't watched, although that has improved with time. Now she is just as loving as can be, treated well, fed a little too well, and is a great pet. BTW, her name is Bulldozer now.
