Two more cents in the pot. I like dual wheels for stability. I never have had a flat while pulling a trailer, but one older gentleman put it in perspective telling about having a flat on a single rear wheel while pulling a camper trailer to Florida. At least with a dual wheel truck, you stand a chance of getting off the road safely with the remaining tire. I thought this was a very good point. Of course, I always make sure the front steer tires are safe. I like a gooseneck or fifth wheel trailer, but I have a bumper triaxle because I sometimes pull it with a motor home. One thing you might consider. For some physics reason, 3 axles tend to be harder to keep from bumping up and down. There is something to do with the harmonics set up by 3 sets of wheels on the pavement as apposed to 2 sets. This has definitly been my experience since I added the 3rd axle. Be sure, as others have posted, to keep the distribution of weight forward on the trailer. Otherwise, fishtailing is the result.
