Looks like most jurisdictions are similar to Washington- basically, force must be proportional to the threat- deadly force to protect yourself and others, if you have an honest and reasonable fear of death or grievous bodily harm at the hands of the agressor. Deadly force never authorized to protect property. That being said, we had a big case in this county a few years back- guy with a remote uninhabited farm had been losing stuff, decided to camp out in the shop. Heard something outside, it was the thief. Fired a warning shot, which unfortunately, went right through the perp's head, killing him instantly. Charged with manslaughter. Jury acquitted him- They thought his story was credible, and that the ill fated shot was an unfortunate accident. "We didn't feel like we could send him to prison for being a poor shot". In cases of this type, you always want a jury, bless their hearts.
